If you're spec'ing a serious gym in the United States, two American brand families dominate the conversation: TKO Strength & Performance (and their premium heavy-commercial line, Defiant Strength) on one side, and York Barbell on the other. Both are American-engineered, authorized-dealer-only, and built for buyers who don't want to replace equipment in five years.
The internet's worth of "best commercial gym brand" content tends to default to whichever brand paid for the placement. This isn't that. We're an authorized dealer for TKO, Defiant, and York. We're not paid to recommend one over the other. What follows is the genuine head-to-head — which brand wins which category, and how to pick.
The 30-second answer
Skip the rest if you just want a recommendation:
- TKO Strength & Performance — best for selectorized weight machines, power racks, and commercial cable equipment. The default answer when you're outfitting a full commercial gym floor or a high-end home gym with stack-loaded machines.
- Defiant Strength — TKO's premium heavy-commercial line. Built for high schools, collegiate strength & conditioning rooms, and heavy-use commercial settings. Iso-lateral plate-loaded machines, multi-stack systems, posterior chain. Not designed for residential or light-commercial budgets.
- York Barbell — best for free-weight equipment (plates, bars, benches, storage) and the workhorse commercial racks that sit in military bases and university gyms. The OG American iron brand.
Read on for the actual comparison.
The brands, in 60 seconds each
TKO Strength & Performance
Headquartered in Houston, Texas. TKO is best known for their selectorized weight machines — the kind of single-station, weight-stack-equipped gear that defines a commercial gym floor. Iso-lateral chest press, leg press, lat pulldown, shoulder press — TKO makes the gym-floor classics in the spec that actually lasts under multi-user load.
TKO also makes commercial-grade power racks (the 920PR and 921HR series), cable equipment (the 7030B Cable Crossover), and dumbbell storage systems. Their racks ship with 7-gauge 3×3" uprights, full safeties, and Westside hole spacing in the press zone — proper commercial spec.
What they're known for: smooth weight stacks, biomechanically correct movement paths, machines you'd actually find in a Class-A commercial gym. Browse TKO at Revive and Lift.
Defiant Strength — TKO's premium line
Defiant is TKO's premium heavy-commercial brand. Same company, different tier. Where TKO covers residential-to-light-commercial and full-commercial budgets, Defiant is engineered specifically for the high-school, collegiate, and heavy-use commercial market — the kind of installations that see hundreds of athletes per week and need to last decades without service.
Defiant's lineup is focused: iso-lateral plate-loaded machines (the DS1000-series — chest press, lat pulldown, shoulder press, row, etc.), multi-stack cable systems (MS2, MS4, MS5, MS8), posterior-chain machines (GHD, reverse hyper, hip thrust, glute bridge), and Olympic benches with plate storage. It's a specialty catalog, built for athletic performance facilities, not a generalist's home gym.
Note: Defiant does build a heavy-commercial rack lineup, but it's reserved for commercial buyers by request and not listed online for retail sale. If you're spec'ing a residential or light-commercial rack inside the TKO/Defiant ecosystem, the public answer is a TKO 920PR or 921HR. Commercial facility buyers wanting the Defiant rack option can contact us for the spec sheet and quote. Browse Defiant Strength online catalog.
York Barbell
Founded in 1932. The original American iron brand. Headquartered in York, Pennsylvania. The brand the entire United States Olympic weightlifting program was built on for decades.
York makes everything bar-and-plate-related: Olympic plates, dumbbells, benches, weight bars, storage racks. They also make a strong commercial rack lineup — the STS Commercial Power Rack 53006, the STS Commercial Half Power Rack 53009, and the STS Triple Combo for multi-station installations. Their identity, though, sits in the iron itself: the G-2 plate sets, the iso-grip plates, the 5'/6' Olympic bars — the pieces that have been in commercial gyms for half a century. Browse York Barbell.
Head-to-head: where each brand wins
For power racks
Two public-catalog choices: TKO and York. Defiant's rack lineup is commercial-only and by request — see the note in the Defiant section above. For most rack buyers, this is a TKO ecosystem decision or a York decision.
- TKO 920PR Commercial Power Rack — full rack, 7-gauge 3×3" uprights, J-cups and safeties included. MAP $2,680–$3,043 depending on configuration. The 920PR with integrated storage runs $4,676–$5,039, and a 920PR Dual setup with storage is $7,334–$7,697.
- TKO 921HR Commercial Half Power Rack — the half-rack alternative if you don't need a full four-post setup. MAP $2,440–$2,803. With storage system: $4,436–$4,805.
- York STS Commercial Power Rack 53006 — full rack at $2,899. The STS Commercial Half Power Rack 53009 sits at $2,249.
- York STS Power Rack with Weight Storage — $1,449 — a strong residential-to-light-commercial pick when budget is tighter.
- York STS Triple Combo Rack — $6,649 — three lifting stations on a single platform for facilities running multiple lifters in parallel.
For most builds the choice comes down to ecosystem: if your selectorized accessory machines are TKO, the 920PR matches the aesthetic and warranty. If your iron is York, the STS rack family matches.

For free weights, plates, and bars
Winner: York Barbell, no contest. York has been making plates and bars since the Great Depression. Their iso-grip rubber-encased plates are the standard reference for commercial gyms. Their 5' and 6' Olympic bars are the spec other brands benchmark against.
If your build is heavy on barbell training — Olympic lifting, powerlifting, traditional strength training — start with York for the iron and use the budget left over for the rack and accessories. Free weights collection.
TKO and Defiant both make plates and bars, but they're not where either brand differentiates.
For selectorized and stack-loaded weight machines
Winner: TKO. TKO's selectorized line — chest press, lat pulldown, leg press, shoulder press, row — is engineered with biomechanically correct movement paths and weight stacks that simply feel smoother than budget alternatives. If you're outfitting a commercial gym floor or a high-end home gym with selectorized machines, TKO is the default answer.
For multi-station builds, Defiant's MS-series multi-stack systems are the heavy-commercial answer: the MS2 Cable Crossover (two 200-lb stacks, MAP $7,530), MS4 4-Stack (MAP $11,790), MS5 5-Stack (MAP $16,160), and MS8 8-Stack (MAP $24,790). These are designed for high-traffic commercial use — overbuilt for the typical home buyer, exactly right for collegiate and heavy-commercial installations.
For iso-lateral plate-loaded machines
Winner: Defiant Strength. The DS1000-series — Iso-Lateral Vertical Chest Press, Incline Chest Press, Decline Press, Front Lat Pulldown, High Row, Vertical Row, Shoulder Press, and matching pulldown variants — are Defiant's signature category. MAP pricing sits in the $2,800–$3,500 range per machine. Plate-loaded means lower long-term cost (no cable maintenance), independent unilateral loading for muscle imbalance work, and easier to relocate than stack-loaded equivalents.
Plate-loaded also means you bring your own iron — pair it with York plates and you have a commercial-grade strength floor.
TKO's iso-lateral options exist but the depth and refinement of Defiant's DS1000 catalog is the differentiator. If iso-lateral plate-loaded is a category you care about, Defiant is the answer.
For posterior chain and athletic performance equipment
Winner: Defiant. The Defiant Glute Ham Developer (GHD), Reverse Hyper Posterior Chain Machine, DS1022 Hip Thrust Machine, DS1030 Glute Bridge Bench, and Inverse Leg Curl Hamstring Machine make Defiant the most complete posterior-chain catalog any of these brands offer. Built for collegiate and athletic performance use cases.
For benches
Winner: York Barbell, primarily on price-to-quality. York makes flat benches, FID benches, preacher curl benches, and abdominal benches that are commercial-rated at residential price points. Benches collection.
Defiant's bench lineup leans different — their Olympic benches with plate storage (incline at $1,550, flat at $1,750, decline at $1,950) and 3-Way Adjustable Bench at $1,090 are excellent in their tier, but they're built for heavy-use commercial pricing.
For cable stations and functional trainers
Three real answers, three different price points:
- Defiant MS2 Cable Crossover — MAP $7,530 — the premium heavy-commercial pick. Two 200-lb stacks, dual adjustable arms, full functional movement range. Built for the same facilities that buy the rest of the Defiant catalog.
- TKO 7030B Cable Crossover Machine — MAP $6,600 — TKO's commercial cable answer. Same heavy-use spec, different ecosystem.
- York STS Cable Crossover — MAP $3,749 (or the STS Angled Cable Crossover at $3,699) — the lighter-commercial / serious home gym answer. Real cable spec at a substantially lower price than the heavy-commercial options.
If your build budget supports it and you're outfitting a heavy-use facility, MS2 is the right call. For a serious home gym or light-commercial studio, the York STS is the better-fitting answer. We compared all three plus the budget-conscious ANCORE Pro alternative in our cable equipment guide.
Warranty and support
This is where the gray-market shopping bites people, and where authorized dealers (like us) earn the price difference. All three brands honor warranty only when sold through authorized dealers. Buying off Amazon Marketplace, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace usually voids it — see our piece on authorized dealer pricing for the full mechanic.
If a frame weld fails three years in (rare, but it happens), the warranty claim is the difference between a free replacement and a $3,000 problem. Buy authorized.
Build quality, in detail
Three signals worth checking when comparing any commercial-grade brand:
- Welds. Look for full continuous welds, not stitch welds. Cracks tend to start at stitch boundaries under cyclic loading. All three brands here are continuous-weld on flagship products.
- Powder coat finish. Quality powder is even, no orange-peel texture, no thin patches at corners. All three brands ship genuinely good finishes.
- Pulley smoothness. Spin a pulley by hand. It should rotate freely with no notch. TKO and Defiant cables both pass; budget gray-market knockoffs usually don't.
Pricing reality
None of these are cheap. None of them should be. Authorized-dealer MAP pricing across the categories:
- Power rack: York STS with storage $1,449 (entry residential) → TKO 921HR Half $2,440–$2,803 → TKO 920PR Full $2,680–$3,043 → York STS Commercial Power Rack 53006 $2,899 → TKO 920PR with storage $4,676–$5,039 → TKO 920PR Dual $7,334–$7,697.
- Cable crossover: York STS Cable Crossover $3,749 → TKO 7030B $6,600 → Defiant MS2 $7,530.
- Multi-stack systems (heavy-commercial): Defiant MS4 $11,790 → MS5 $16,160 → MS8 $24,790.
- Iso-lateral plate-loaded machine: Defiant DS1000-series $2,800–$3,500 per machine.
- Olympic bench with plate storage: Defiant incline $1,550 → flat $1,750 → decline $1,950.

So which one's right for you?
Cleanest decision tree we know:
- Residential, serious home gym (~$5K–$15K): York STS rack + York iron + a TKO selectorized accessory machine. Add a York or TKO cable crossover if cable work is a priority.
- Light-commercial / personal training studio: TKO 920PR rack, TKO selectorized lineup, York free weights. Add a TKO 7030B or York STS cable crossover.
- High school, collegiate, or heavy-commercial facility: TKO racks (920PR or 920PR Dual) + Defiant DS1000 iso-lateral plate-loaded machines + Defiant MS-series multi-stack + Defiant posterior chain + York iron. This is the ecosystem Defiant is engineered for.
- Bar-and-plate-heavy build, traditional strength training: York for the iron and the rack. Add a TKO selectorized accessory if isolation work matters.
- Limited space, foldable rack: Lycan Fitness for the rack, York for the bar and plates.
- Full-size commercial gym: all three brands, depending on category. Get in touch for a build sheet.
The most common winning mix in serious home gyms we equip is: TKO 920PR rack + York bar and plates + TKO selectorized accessory. For collegiate and heavy-commercial builds, swap the TKO selectorized for Defiant DS1000 plate-loaded and add an MS-series multi-stack. The brands are complementary, not interchangeable — that's the point.
